The Goal

To create a cozy, design-driven short-term rental retreat using modular shipping containers — one that embraces the raw beauty of the Joshua Tree landscape while working carefully around the site’s existing Joshua trees, which shaped and constrained the final layout and orientation of each container module.

The Details

Four containers are arranged as distinct volumes linked by exterior decks, walkways, and a sail-shade canopy strung between them — preserving the site’s mature Joshua trees and framing intimate outdoor rooms in the spaces between. A sunken spa and fire pit lounge area anchors the central courtyard, while one container is dedicated to a private bedroom suite. A rooftop deck accessed by an exterior ladder stair offers an elevated lookout over the desert and mountains beyond.

The Materials

The raw, industrial character of the shipping containers is celebrated rather than concealed — corrugated steel siding in bold yellow and charcoal tones is paired with oversized black-framed glazing. A steel cable rooftop railing, exposed steel stair, and a lightweight fabric sail shade introduce a casual, glamping-inspired warmth, while a simple gravel and concrete patio ties the composition together.
