The Goal
To design a fully cast-concrete retreat that showcases the beauty of raw, exposed concrete construction — creating a durable, low-maintenance Airbnb that embraces indoor-outdoor desert living and stands up to the extremes of the Joshua Tree climate.
The Details
A long, cantilevered concrete roof plane extends well beyond the building’s footprint, creating deep shaded overhangs and a covered outdoor living and dining area anchored by a fire pit. Oversized glass sliding and folding doors open the great room completely to the patio. Outside, a sleek rectangular pool, a wood slat-covered pergola lounge, and expansive gravel and concrete patios create multiple zones for relaxing under the desert sky.
The Materials
The home is defined by its cast-in-place, board-formed concrete construction — walls, roof, and overhangs all expressed in raw concrete with visible formwork texture. Weathered corten steel panels provide warm, rust-toned accents at the entry and select façades, while black-framed glass doors bring light deep into the interior. A wood slat pergola and steel-framed outdoor furniture complete the material palette.
